Check in on your own mental health

May 24, 2023/in Sound Mind/by Deidre Ashley

In today’s fast-paced world the importance of mental health cannot be overstated. Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel and act in our daily lives.

A sound mental state is crucial to our overall well-being and quality of life. Unfortunately, with the ever-increasing demands of modern life, many people neglect their mental health. This can lead to a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, substance abuse and other mental health disorders.

It is important to recognize that while May is Mental Health Awareness Month, attending to your mental health is just as important as physical health. In fact, the two are intricately linked. Poor mental health can lead to a range of physical health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure and chronic pain. This is why taking care of our mental health is not a luxury but a necessity.

We have all heard by now that there is a strong link between physical and mental health. This is because our mind and body are closely interconnected and influence the other’s functioning. When we experience physical health problems it can impact our mental health, and vice versa. For example, if you are experiencing chronic pain or illness it can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety and stress. Similarly, mental health issues such as anxiety and depression can lead to physical symptoms like headaches, fatigue and insomnia.

Taking care of your physical health can have a positive impact on your mental health and well-being. Engaging in regular exercise, eating a healthy and balanced diet, and getting enough sleep can help to improve your mood, reduce stress and anxiety and boost your overall mental health.

On the other hand, prioritizing your mental health can have a positive impact on your physical health. This is because when you take care of your mental health you are more likely to engage in healthy behaviors and are better equipped to manage stress and other challenges that can impact your physical health.

Why is mental health more of an issue today? Each day we are all exposed to various stressors, a fast-paced world and a ton of information coming at us. This can all take a toll on our mental health. As a result, many common mental health issues have emerged in recent times.

One of the most prevalent mental health issues is anxiety. With the constant pressure to perform, meet deadlines and succeed in all aspects of life, it is no surprise that many people experience feelings of anxiety and panic attacks. Depression is also becoming increasingly common, which can be triggered by numerous factors such as trauma, stress, loss and genetics.

Another common mental health issue is addiction. In today’s world we have easy access to various substances and behaviors that can lead to addiction, such as alcohol, drugs, gambling and social media. Addiction can have a severe impact on mental health, leading to co-occurring disorders like anxiety and depression.

Moreover, many people are also struggling with self-esteem issues and body image concerns, which can lead to eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia. The constant pressure to look a certain way and fit into societal norms can have a significant impact on mental health.

It is important to recognize these common mental health issues and seek help when needed.

Despite all the recent attention, the stigma surrounding mental health remains and can have a negative impact on how individuals perceive themselves and seek help. Unfortunately, many people still view mental illness as a weakness or personal failing rather than recognizing it as a legitimate medical condition. This stigma can leave individuals feeling ashamed and isolated, causing them to avoid seeking help or talking about their struggles with loved ones.

Moreover, the stigma attached to mental health can prevent individuals from receiving the treatment they need, leading to prolonged suffering and worsening of symptoms.

It is crucial to break down these stigmas and create an open, supportive environment where individuals feel comfortable seeking help when they need it. By prioritizing mental health and acknowledging the validity of mental illness, we can create a more compassionate and understanding world for those who are struggling.

It is important to have conversations about mental health with friends and family, to educate ourselves and others and to support those who are seeking treatment. Together we can work toward a world where mental health is seen as a priority and everyone can feel comfortable seeking the help they need.

Prioritizing mental health is crucial in today’s fast-paced world. With so many demands on our time and attention it can be easy to neglect our own well-being. But by making simple changes to our daily routine, we can prioritize mental health and improve our overall quality of life. What are some ways to prioritize mental health?

  • Make time for self-care. The key is to find activities that help you relax and recharge, and to make time for them on a regular basis.
  • Maintain a healthy work-life balance.
  • Find healthy ways to regulate your stress levels.
  • Do a mental health self check and find free expert-vetted resources at Teton.CredibleMind.com.

As a call to action I encourage everyone to take a moment to check in with themselves and prioritize their mental health. Whether it is taking a break from work, talking to a trusted friend or professional or simply taking a deep breath and practicing mindfulness.

Every little bit helps.

Poor mental health can lead to a range of physical health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure and chronic pain.
